A lively, truly eventful, freezing night at the feeder. My guests included regulars, but newcomers arrived as well.
For now I’m only watching the camera images, but if the movement becomes regular, I’ll commit myself to a full night on the stand.
The Zeiss camera in the field measured -5°C, while the Spypoint
cameras measured -7°C.
Even with regular game movement, hunting success isn’t guaranteed, whereas a random appearance followed by weeks of disappearance almost certainly means an unsuccessful “hunt.”
For me, a successful “hunt” is a lively, eventful night at the feeder — regardless of whether I had any chance to draw the bow at all.
And if, on top of all that, freshly fried wild boar liver, with fresh bread and pickled cucumbers, ends up on the breakfast table, that combination of circumstances, opportunity, skill, and hunting luck is a gift rarely granted.
And as we’ve known since Shakespeare, what truly has value in a person’s life is that which has little likelihood, or is rarely granted.
“A holiday dazzles us so,
Because it shines out from gray days,
Rarely, as in a necklace,
Here and there a true gem blazes.”
