My currently nicely set-up feeder (there are still plans for further development…) hosted the already well-known large sounder again today, after a few days’ break. The NDZ18 BigGreenScum01 camera captured them first, at 4:57, setting off from the patch of forest behind the camera and crossing over at the wallow. Naturally the acorn feeder was their next stop, and finally they ended up at the table set for them at my feeder.
In one of the images used as illustration (5:28:30), the curiosity of one — perhaps a yearling — piglet was caught by the corn-filled, covered tree trunk made of almond wood (Prunus dulcis, syn. Prunus communis, Prunus amygdalus, or Amygdalis communis). Its presumably sensitive nose likely picked up the scent of the corn inside, which — softened by the moisture of the wood and the warmth of the sun under the “cover” — was already giving off the distinctive smell of fermentation.
They’ve already discovered it, that’s the main thing. Now it’s only a matter of time before the scent becomes an allure strong enough to make them shift the lid off it. And then, what joy there will be!
However, once they figure out the “secret,” the corn inside won’t really have had much time to ferment. 🙂
